The next session of “Actual problems of applied mathematics” seminar will be dedicated to G. I. Marchuk's anniversary

Mathematical center in Akademgorodok invites you to take part in the seminar on June 12 at 6 pm Novosibirsk time (UTC+7).
The seminar’s heads – I. A. Taimanov, S. I. Kabanikhin, A. E. Mironov, M. A. Shishlenin.
The secretary – N. M. Prokhoshin (n.prokhoshin@g.nsu.ru).

V. P. Dymnikov (RAS academician) and E. M. Volodin (Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics RAS) will present their talk “Modern problems of modeling of climate and its changes”

The talk will cover various modern challenges for the climate processes modeling. Currently, there are tens of different climate models which are regularly used in coordinated experiments in the framework of CMIP (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project). Their comparison consists of mandatory experiments which are: preindustrial ones (where all the influence on the climate system is fixed) quadrupling of CO2 emissions modeling, historical experiment (1850-2014), and lots of other subprojects. These subprojects cover modeling of climate of the past, making scenarios of future climate changes, evaluation of consequences of hypothetical geoengineering influence and research into the mechanisms of different blocks of the Earth system, such as the carbon cycle, aerosol evolution, chemistry of the atmosphere, biochemistry of the ocean and evolution of ice sheet.

One of the major modern problems is that the models' sensitivity to the doubling of CO2 concentration varies from model to model, and that the range of uncertainty increases. We will look into the processes that impact this sensitivity, what are the distinctions of modeling the climate with different sensitivities, how the natural climate fluctuations are connected to this sensitivity. You will learn how modern models recreate the extreme natural events statistics and how does it change due to the climate change. We will also cover the impact of methane on the past and future climate changes.

To take part, please, on June 12 after 5:45 pm Novosibirsk time (UTC+7) connect to the Zoom conference via this link: .
You can also connect manually in the Zoom app using the Conference ID: 934 7387 9731.
