The schools run from January 8 to 12 on the grounds of SESC and NSU. The program is designed for high school students and aims at helping the students keep up with the latest discoveries in physics and mathematics. The main objectives of the program are to promote and popularize academic knowledge, and to engage high school students in research and project activities.
In his welcome address to the students, rector of NSU Mikhail Fedoruk noted the close connection between physics and mathematics:
Novosibirsk is known for its very strong physics and mathematics schools. For example, our physicists contributed significantly to a mathematical field of exact solutions of nonlinear integral equations. A huge part of this was made by a graduate of the Physics Department of NSU Vladimir Zakharov. In the list of the graduates of the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU is Efim Zelmanov, a winner of the Fields prize, which is regarded as the mathematician's Nobel Prize. Altogether, you’ve chosen the right place to come. I hope that your next choice will be to come back and go to SESC and then to NSU.
The physics school, named after Archimedes, was attended by 77 students of grades 9 to 11 from 15 regions of Russia and Kazakhstan. The mathematics school, named after Lobachevsky, accepted 50 kids from 11 regions of Russia and the city of Baikonur in Kazakhstan. The students of the schools are the winners and participants of regional Olympiads, winners and medalists of All-Siberia open Olympiad for schoolchildren, and top students of Distance learning school of SESC.
During this week, the students will attend classes held by NSU teachers and research fellows of Novosibirsk scientific center. On the very first day of the Archimedes school, students visited the Experimental Physics Lab of the General physics school of NSU Department of Physics. They saw ‘science in action’ – experiments presented by lab staff under the supervision of Candidate of Science, associate professor Alexander Zolkin. Pupils also visited Institute of Nuclear Physics, one of the largest research institutes of Akademgorodok. The students of Lobachevsky school had their first classes in the morning, and after lunch the kids went to visit the Novosibirsk Planetarium.
In addition to classes and excursions, the schedule includes intellectual and creative competitions and contests – like traditional Physbattle, ‘What? Wh ere? When’, ‘1 plus 1’, ‘Photomole’, ‘Sciquest’. On the last day of schools, a disco party will take place.
Based on the results of studies, best participants will be invited to Summer school of the SESC of NSU, which will be held in August 2020. In turn, the successful completion of Summer school guarantees admission to the SESC.
Winter physics school ‘Archimedes’ has been held at the SESC of NSU since 2015 with the support of NSU from the fund of 5-100 program as part of the ‘New Physics’ project of SAU (Strategic Academic Units). The Lobachevsky school was held at the initiative of the SESC, Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU, Sobolev Institute of Mathematics SB RAS and Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok.
