MCA held a Winter School on Topological Data Analysis

Mathematical center in Akademgorodok, NSU, and Sobolev Institute of Mathematics SB RAS held a workshop “Winter school on topological data analysis”. The event took place from February 3 to 8 on the grounds of NSU and brought together more than 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD students, faculty and research fellows from NSU and IM SB RAS.

Scientific program of the workshop included two courses delivered by leading experts in the field of topological analysis. Every course offered four lectures and was devoted to various aspects of topology and their application in data analytics.

Professor Massimo Ferri (Bologna University, Italy) taught a course on topological and nontopological persistence (theory and practice). Lectures by professor Kelin Xia (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) were devoted to topological data analysis-based machine learning models for biomolecular data analysis.

Such events are always a great success as they contribute to creating a collaborative network among researchers from academia worldwide and national labs,” said a corresponding member of RAS and a member of program committee of the workshop A. E. Mironov. “Participants benefit not only by listening to information presented by the speakers, but also (due to the collaborative environment) by casually interacting with them and each other during coffee breaks. Students ask questions and have immediate answers which can lead to obtaining new results in the field.”

Another topic covered during the workshop was moduli spaces of marked algebraic curves. The goal of a lecture course taught by A. Yu. Buryak (University of Leeds, Great Britain) was to acquaint the audience with the main properties of moduli spaces of marked algebraic curves and their applications in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics.
