A strategic session of the NSU Engineering School for its students, teachers and partners was held at the beginning of February

The project  (ES) is a young one: the first enrollment took place in 2019. Despite that fact, students and teachers, think about their future, the formation and development of the programs "Artificial Intelligence" and "Applied Engineering".

The idea of synchronizing views about the engineering school and initiating a discussion about its further development came from a team of first-year students as part of the development of the project in the class "The basics of project management". Thus, an initiative was born to hold a and it was supported by the dean of the Mathematics and mechanics department of NSU (MMD) Igor V. Marchuk and the director of Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok Evgeny P. Vdovin.

For five days, teams of students, teachers, and ES partners in full-immersion mode analyzed the current state of affairs and identified problems and possible growth points. The teams worked on such topics as educational formats, positioning of the School and enrollment criteria, internships and work with potential partners, specialization, and other topics.

Anastasia V. Karpenko, deputy dean of the MMD, comments:

A strategic session is a format in which there are no usual roles: teacher, student, partner. Within the framework of the process, all participants play the same role of the ES designer and, thus, take responsibility for the development of the School. The teams presented their developments to the customer – the dean, emphasizing what exactly they are ready to do in order to make a proposed change happen.

The dean of the Mathematics and mechanics department of NSU Igor V. Marchuk, emphasizes:

The Engineering School project is strategic for me, and a strategy is something that is developed collectively, not imposed from above. Conducting such sessions is precisely aimed at developing a common vision, as well as a development strategy. I am ready to support project teams that come up with elaborate initiatives and strive to change or form something within the framework of the ES.

To synchronize the positions of the groups and form a general picture of ES, plenary sessions were organized, as well as cross-talk between the groups — "Turntable".

Angela Shadrina, a first-year student at ES, shares:

Strat-session is just one of the stages of ES growth, but a very important one. During this event, we honed the concept of development, the image of a graduate of the Engineering School. This was important for every participant. It was a surprise to me that the plenaries play an important role in all of this. The main exchange of thoughts and controversial issues resolution took place at the general speeches that. The work of the groups was not isolated, on the third day it became especially clear that we were working on different aspects of the same issue, it was the multiple versatile study that allowed the emergence of a common concept.

When considering a specific area, each group tried to form and maintain a central focus — the image of the School graduate. They took into account both the competencies available on the territory of NSU and Akademgorodok, as well as the ambition to create leaders capable of feeling the current scientific and technological frontiers, to set and solve high-tech tasks that change the world and society.

The second-year student of ES Lukyanov Andrey, comments:

Participation in the strategic session was an opportunity for me to influence the development of the Engineering School. Together with coursemates and freshmen, teachers and program partners, during one week we worked out a specialization strategy and a training plan for the senior courses of ES, worked on the image of a graduate and put forward hypotheses for the formation of this image. The result of our work is a model of polyspecialization and focus on the technological frontier. In addition, the strategic session allowed not only to present a plan for further training, but also to establish contact with new partners.

Daria Shestakova, a first-year student of ES, says:

During the strategic session, I worked in the "Project managment" team. I came to it with a complete lack of understanding of the result, but during the group work and plenary sessions, the team and I realized what the organizers wanted from us, and it really helped a lot. Inspirational speeches by Evgeny P. Vdovin, constant reflections in the team gave us the right attitude and, most importantly, an impetus. So we identified the goal of our — to clarify the protocol of actions of ES students, which, as a result, will be able to easily be introduced into any activity. We came to the conclusion that this protocol should be embedded in the image of a graduate of the Engineering School, since a graduate is a person with an intention, capable of acting and analyzing their actions.

Polina Kaushan, a first-year student of ES, says:

Working in the "Electives/Minors" group during the strategic session, I realized that I was studying at the university and I hadn't even known how many opportunities education provides! Discussing what electives could be introduced in the Engineering School, I was pleasantly surprised that there is an opportunity to attend electives of other faculties, considering that before it had seemed like something unrealistic. A strategic session is above all an opportunity to be heard! This is a completely different format of communication: with teachers as colleagues, with students not as friends. The main thing is that we all pursued the same goal — to project a happy future for the Engineering School. Only by combining efforts, we will be able to create something truly worthwhile, because we try first of all for ourselves. It was a unique experience that allows us to create a learning environment that will be comfortable for us.

The second-year student of the ES Konstantin Nosorev, comments:

The results of the work of our group, as well as of other groups, became a revelation for some: we analyzed how many opportunities there really are in NSU and Akademgorodok, and were pleasantly surprised. The main thing is to use all this information correctly and be responsible for the result. This is especially important when working with external business partners who want the end result. As part of the work of our group, we have already started the implementation of a pilot project.

The head of the project Evgeny P. Vdovin says:

An engineer trained at a national research university, like NSU, is primarily a subject capable of independent goals setting, planning and implementing actions to achieve these goals and getting great results. Therefore, the training of engineers is impossible without the development of the relevant competencies. In particular, future engineers are primarily responsible for their own training. The strategic session is aimed at the formation of subjectivity in future engineers, the readiness to make decisions, implement them and be responsible for the results.

Igor Solodov, head of the Big Data and Artificial Intelligence team at the Huawei Research Center in Novosibirsk, says:

The "Engineering School" project for us is, first of all, the basis for long-term cooperation. This is a unique project for NSU, which combines a fundamental approach to education at a classical university and an engineering approach in practical projects. In the market of the future, and even today, such new research engineers are in great demand, and what they can invent and implement can greatly change the world for the better. We are ready to cooperate with ES NSU in this direction, during the strategic session we proposed several directions for the development of ES together with us, partners of NSU and ES NSU. I hope that we will see the first results together by the end of the current semester.

Elena A. Plotnikova, the teacher of mathematical analysis at ES, says:

The format of the strategic session is interesting in that it provides each participant with the opportunity to expand their usual role (student, teacher, organizer, supervisor, partner), discuss significant issues of ES development, feel many of the nuances and difficulties in planning and implementing the Engineering School. In particular, our group dealt with issues of training in junior courses, wh ere one of the main tasks, while maintaining the traditions of classical education at the MMD, is to increase and organically fit the applied practical component into educational activities. Joint work in a team allowed us to analyze the existing situation from various angles and find possible options for adjusting the educational process for 1–2 courses. The main results of the strategic session, in my opinion, are not only concrete decisions on the development of ES, but also the awareness of the participating students that they are the future engineers-researchers.
