The Great Mathematical Workshop of the year 2021 – recall that this year is declared the Year of Science and Technology – joined a number of fundamental and applied projects at the site of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok. Within one of the projects, NSU students along with students of NSUADA – ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø of Architecture, Design and Arts) – have developed a unique algorithm for calculating the carbon footprint which was named the Carbolator. Unlike analogs, the project allows users to get values as close to reality as possible with the help of 24 questions that take into account the way of life of a person and the territorial characteristics of Russia and neighboring countries.
The main difference is that it is tailored to meet the realities of our country. Similar calculators have been developed for other countries, where, for example, the ways of getting electricity are different. The questions try to cover all processes of individual activities that give off greenhouse gases. The user can understand what adjustments he can make to his habits to reduce the carbon footprint. It is also necessary for the user to be able to answer these questions as conveniently and quickly as possible, commented Vitaly Danilko, second year postgraduate student of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU who was the project coordinator and designer of the software.
Another unique feature of our Carbon Footprint Calculator is visualization of the results. While similar calculators give as a result just the final number, the Carbolator provides clear and convincing infographics.
A glacier covered with cracks was selected as a graphical representation. The cracks get brighter and more massive as the carbon footprint increases. The infographic for the Carbolator was designed by students from NSUADA, said Professor Evgeny Vdovin, director of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok.
According to Vitaly Danilko, the algorithm is being finalized and in the near future will be transferred to the internal server of the university for general use. At present, you can answer the questions and calculate your carbon footprint in the test mode on .
