NSU students have created a regular popular-science mathematical festival

On May 20 and 21, the This is Mathematics festival will be held, organized by a team of students from the Mathematics and mechanics department of NSU headed by Elizaveta Markhinina. It will be held for the second time  last year it was held under the name "Mathematical Gifts".

The motto of the festival is "an amusing event for active young minds". It accurately describes the concept, because the purpose of the festival is to show all the beauty and fascination of mathematics and break the stereotype that mathematics is limited to tasks in a school textbook. Mathematical workshops, games, an exhibition will be held at the festival, as well as real mathematicians of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok will give lectures on various mathematical concepts in an accessible form.

The festival will be held on May 20 and 21 in the 'Balkon' space (269/1 Kropotkina St., Novosibirsk). And it will be interesting there not only for children and teenagers, but also for adults. Mathematics has no restrictions on age and level of knowledge. Mathematics is for everyone, and therefore this festival is for everyone too.

Elizaveta and the festival team came up with the idea and started organizing the festival at the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics as part of the Project Management course. The team also included Sofia Yurchenko, Alina Spesivtseva, Pavel Ermolaev, Ilya Zelinsky and Valeria Terekhina. Then they were joined by Alina Pereladova, Ekaterina Ivanova, Alexandra Plaksina, Vladimir Kuznetsov, Vadim Ilyasov, Ilya Guseletov and Alexander Mishchenko. Moreover, department's students Georgy Patrin, Vyacheslav Kolybelko, Polina Kaushan and Elizaveta Bulgakova created exhibits for the festival exhibition.

The festival attracted the attention of the team of the Mathematical Center in Academgorodok, as a result of which it received its support. We tried to find out from Elizabeth the secret of the success of their project in a short interview.

How did you come up with the idea of a festival?

We wanted to do something related to math because we love math and we want everyone to love math. Initially, various pop-science formats were discussed, but the format of the festival seemed to suit us the most. The festival is about fun and relaxation. We decided that it would be cool to combine the entertainment component with the educational one. Virtually no previous knowledge of mathematics is required from festival guests, while they have the opportunity to see that mathematics can be beautiful, fun and interesting.

What was the hardest aspect of your organization process?

In the process of implementation, the most difficult thing was to meet the deadlines  we left ourselves a little more than a month for implementation. There were no problems with thinking through the concept and writing the documentation, because here we were assisted by the lecturer Kristina A. Nasybullova and the project curator Daria V. Lytkina. Whenever we had some difficulties or were not sure what would be the best thing to do, we could consult with them and get help.

How successful was the first festival?

Most of it worked out. I would even say that everything worked out, with the exception of small nuances. We received positive feedback from those who came to the festival and from those who helped in its creation: the curator, teachers, speakers, volunteers. We liked how the event went. Also, it seems to me, an important incentive to continue developing the project was the student project competition within NSU. We received a lot of very useful recommendations on the project, as well as the support of the Mathematical Center.

What is coming to the festival this year?

This year the festival will last two days: May 2021. Guests can choose which day is more convenient for them to come or attend on both days. Also, we announced the theme of the festival  mathematics in life. This means that most of the events at the festival will be related to various applications of mathematics.

How is your festival different from other scientific events?

There are not many scientific or pop-sci festivals in Novosibirsk, and mostly they are not about mathematics. Our festival is about mathematics, and about mathematics for everyone: even if a person barely remembers school mathematics program, everything will be clear and interesting at our festival. We show how different and beautiful mathematics can be, a person with any level of knowledge can see it.
