NSU IT Department Students Successful at ICPC Northern Eurasia Finals 2021-2022

On April 13, the Northern Eurasia Finals of the 2021/22 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) took place. Student teams competed to reach the final with teams from universities in Western and Eastern Siberia, the Far East competed in Barnaul. Among the participants were 5 teams with students from the NSU Department of Information Technologies (ITD) and (MMD). As a result of the competition, NSU students .

«Winnie the Pooh», an ITD team with Anton Mokrousov, Artem Plyusnin, and Sofya Lylova won the regional semi-final solving 6 problems. This result placed them (18th among universities) and they received a II degree diploma at the Northern Eurasia Finals 2021-2022. The «La-La» team, with ITD students Semyon Vlasov and Viktor Lozhnikov, won bronze in the regional and a III degree diploma.

Vadim Zaitsev, one of the NSU national team coaches in sports programming, participant in two ICPC finals in Orlando (2011) and Yekaterinburg (2014), and Senior Lecturer at NSU ITD, described the results,

The Mokrousov-Plyusnin-Lylov team results taking 40th place and a II degree diploma demonstrates good progress compared to last year (61st place and 31st among universities) and the best result in the last 5 years. These results provide our students with a real chance for the final. In general, the team performed well during the contest and this year they solved the problem during the last hour when they started solving not to give up anything in the second half of the contest. The undergraduate team with Vlasov-Lozhnikov-Maksakovsky also improved their results compared to last year. They solved 4 problems taking 75th place and a III degree diploma. This is the first time in several years that two NSU teams took diplomas not only in Siberia and the Far East, but for the entire competition.

The «Piglet» team with first and second year ITD students Rimma Tolkacheva, Mark Bukhner and MMD student Stepan Kulakov, took fifth place in the Siberian region and 112th place among 260 teams. This would be a noteworthy result for even seasoned programmers. According to Zaitsev, the team has huge potential for growth in the standings next year if students are motivated by full-time participation in competitions to devote more time to training. Finally, the teams «Wrong Bees» (ITD students Pavel Kholyavko, Andrey Kutalev, Anton Kudinov) and «Honey Pot» (MMD student Anton Konev, ITD students Daria Avtsinova, Maxim Polukhin) took 8th and 19th places in the region, 134th and 190th places in the overall ranking respectively.

The Coach added,

The «Honey Pot» team is made up entirely of freshmen. This was their first competition and they left with a solved problem in a difficult year when a quarter of the teams were not able to solve more than one problem. It would be great if the students had a positive experience at the Competition and want to continue.
