The World Robot Olympiad is an international robotics tournament for young people ages 10 to 21. The annual event takes place in November and is conducted in a different country every year. More than 1500 young people from over 50 countries participate. This year the championship was held from November 9 -12 in San Jose (Costa Rica). The Olympiad has competitions in three Categories: Regular, Open and Football Robots.
The selection for the world competition took place in several stages: regional (May 2017), Russian (June), federal training camps (August). The Novosibirsk team "League of Robots - Binom" competed in the Senior age group (Senior High) in the Regular Category. In addition to Oleg Marchenko, team members included Pavel Toropov, a student from Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU), Alexander Khamkhoev, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Physics-Mathematics Lyseum № 239, coach Valery Rassomakhin (NSTU) and judge Nikolai Pak.
Test competitions took place over two days: the first (qualification round) selected up to 64 teams to compete on the second day when the winners were determined. The Federal Robotics Network "League of Robots" reported that “Our athletes were leading with a wide margin at all stages, it was the only team that completed the additional task and took 1st place in the Regular Senior Category of the World Robot Olympiad 2017”.
Oleg Marchenko has been involved with robotics since the 8th grade at Lyceum No. 159. In 2014, he won the Russian stage of the Olympiad in the Open Category for the first time, and since 2015 he has participated in the Regular Category. In 2015 and 2016 Marchenko was a member of the Russian National Team at the World Robot Olympiad and went to competitions in India and Qatar. According to Marchenko, he decided to study at the NSU IT Department because he really likes programming and electronics, "I think in the future my life and career will be closely related to robotics" said Marchenko.
