Six Young Foreign Researchers Join Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok

The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok (MCA), a world-class mathematical institution, one of several that were established as part of the Russian national "Science" project, announced the results of their postdoc competition for foreigners.  An international group of experts reviewed 23 applications and selected six to join the Program.

NSU Earth Sciences Journal Joins GeoScienceWorld System

In October, the English-language version of NSU’s Russian Geology and Geophysics (RGG) journal was added to GeoScienceWorld (GSW), the leading collection of scientific journals on earth sciences. The GSW Internet resource will now distribute the electronic version of the Journal along with other top-rated international publications. This will make RGG more available to the world’s geological elite.

Novosibirsk Scientists Developing Coronavirus Treatment

NSU Professor Sergei Nikonov, Head of the Laboratory for Biomedical Applications of Quantum Materials, Devices, and Systems, proposed a fundamentally new concept for inactivation of viral pathogens using photodynamic therapy (PDT).

October 22 to November 11, the NSU Humanities Institute hosted the Second International Scientific "Heritage" Forum. Most Forum events, including discussions on studying national cultures and values amidst the challenges of globalization, were conducted using a video conferencing format.

NSU MA Graduate Research Helps Assess Poverty in Zambia

Owen Siyoto, an MA graduate of the Big Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence Program at the NSU Mechanics and Mathematics Department, completed a thesis applying the learning transfer and ridge regression concepts to satellite imagery to predict poverty in Zambia.

Scientists Investigate Effect of Corticosteroid Hormones on Heart Surgery in Children

Russian scientists were part of an international team that conducted a study on the role of corticosteroid hormones (dexamethasone) on complications and mortality in children undergoing surgery for congenital heart defects.

NSU Scientists Win Grant for Nonlinear Photonics

Russian-German partners from the NSU Physics Department Nonlinear Photonics Laboratory and the Weierstrass Institute of Mathematics (Berlin) will conduct research on mathematical models and nonlinear processes underlying the operation of hybrid fiber laser systems with a semiconductor amplifier. The NSU Photonics Center is a world leader in the application of machine learning methods in laser systems. They are developing a technological platform for the development of a new generation of lasers.

NSU Researchers Study How Proteins Collide with DNA

Researchers at the NSU Natural Sciences Department’s Laboratory of Protein Engineering studied what happens when moving DNA polymerases, the proteins that copy genetic information, collide with other proteins that are tightly attached to DNA. The results of their work were published in the Swiss journal “Genes”.

NSU Scientists Investigate History of the “Traveling Salesman” Algorithm

Rene van Bevern, Head of the Algorithm Laboratory, NSU Department of Mechanics and Mathematics and Victoria Slugina, Deputy Director of Research at the Humanities Institute, studied the origin of the algorithm for a classic combinatorial optimization problem, “the traveling salesman”.
