Novosibirsk Scientist’s Ebola Drug Among 2019’s 10 Most Interesting Patents

“Rospatent” recognized an Ebola virus drug developed by Novosibirsk scientists as one of the 10 most significant patents in 2019. Developed by researchers at the Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry SB RAS and the "Vector" State Scientific Center for Virology and Biotechnology, the drug was awarded first place on the list. “Rospatent” reported that unlike existing treatments, the Novosibirsk Ebola virus suppressant has low toxicity.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is an acute highly contagious viral disease caused by the Ebola virus. Infection occurs through contact with the biological fluids of an infected patient and mortality reaches 90%. The first Ebola outbreak was recorded in March 2014 in Guinea. From 2014-2015 11,000 people died from the disease in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Nariman Salakhutdinov, Professor at NSU’s Zelman Institute of Medicine and Psychology Fundamental Medicine Section and Head of their Laboratory for New Drugs, talked about the drug’s development,

The work creating agents that can be effective on the Marburg virus, that is close to the Ebola virus, began in our Section at the Institute. Researchers discovered a class of compounds that showed activity on the Marburg pseudovirus and drew our attention to the Ebola virus. There were no samples of the natural or Ebola pseudovirus at the University so we developed a cooperative relationship with “Vector”. This joint collaboration led to the creation of the patented drug but you cannot overestimate the importance of the University’s role in the beginning.

In addition to the Ebola vaccine, the Rospatent top ten patented inventions of 2019 include a leak detection system in the nuclear reactor loop, a big data technology system that identifies optimal ATM installation locations, a Yandex algorithm that increases the accuracy of delivery, and a foaming agent to extinguish a fire in arctic conditions.
