Education in Russian: First Steps

Traditionally, this summer the NSU Center for International Educational Programs held a Summer School giving a Russian language course for international students. This year the course was organized with the support of the RF Ministry of Education and Science in the frameworks of “Education in Russian” project.

A Summer School is a unique opportunity to visit the biggest Russian-speaking country, immerse into its culture and learn the language. By early afternoon the students studied the Russian language. During the breaks they could drink tea and have informal chats with Russian students studying Intercultural Communication and foreign languages.

Cultural events were organized regularly, 2-3 times a week. The international students had a sightseeing tour of Novosibirsk, visited the Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy. They enjoyed the celebration of the City Day and were impressed with the Railway Museum in the open air. Despite a long trip and traffic jams, the students had lifetime experience of a Military Historical Festival “Siberian Fire 2014” (a historical reenactment) and an aviation holiday “Sky is my Love” devoted to the 100 anniversary of the Russian air defense and the 85 anniversary of the Civil Aviation in Siberia. An exciting and mentally beneficial walk brought them to the center of Novosibirsk to visit the Museum of Soviet Life and Novosibirsk City Museum. Sights of great interest are traditionally Novosibirsk Zoo and the Opera and Ballet Theatre.

In addition, Russian NSU students conducted a model lesson “A Day of Russia” and prepared mini-festivals for the international guests: “A Day of Russian Cuisine”, “A Day of Russian Culture”, an intellectual game “Try to understand me” and a quiz-show devoted to Russia and Siberia.

The total number of international students attending this Summer School was 75, including students from China, the USA, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Turkey, Italy and the Republic of Korea.
