This year, NSU welcomes graduate students from France, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Bangladesh and Mongolia.
Gagik Mkrtchyan, the Dean of the Economics Department, believes that Master’s programs at universities of other countries encourage young specialists to be more academically mobile. “We have a lot of graduates working in famous western universities. I am sure that enrolling in a Master’s program in another country after getting a Bachelor’s degree in your own country is a worthwhile experience. Inertia and passivity cause a lack of new ideas and knowledge. Integrity into the life of the university you chose for studying is also very important, so communication with Russian students is really helpful for our international students,” says the Dean.
Although knowledge of Russian is not a prerequisite for studying at NSU with a number of Master’s programs delivered in English, some international students are quite fluent in Russian and some take courses of Russian in addition to the main program. Such Master programs were launched at NSU with the support of the Project 5-100.
Why did these international students choose NSU? This is what they say:
Alexandra Febles (Puerto Rico)
I was keen on studying Russian. While looking through rankings of Russian universities, I discovered that NSU is one of strongest and most prestigious universities in Russia. I had gotten a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in my country. Here I find everything new and unusual. I really like it. I see lots of international students and greenery all around. Back at home, it’s more scaled-down. My main stereotype about Akademgorodok was its permanently cold weather. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the weather was when I arrived.
