RF government has published a government decree on allocating federal subsidies in 2014 according to the Program on competitive recovery of the leading Russian universities.
According to the decree, NSU will get 775 million rubles from the Federal Treasury aimed at its competitive growth in 2014.
Alexey Okunev, the NSU Prorector for External Affairs, says, “The extra-budgetary resources to the “Top-100” program are to be spent to support our projects of paying benefits for the faculty who publish their articles in journals indexed and the staff of new joint Labs organized in cooperation with Akademgorodok’s research institutes. Some part of the resources allocated will be given to NSU departments with the aim to increase their individual parameters according to the Program on competitive international recovery. About 20% goes to emergent repair works that the university building requires. In addition, we expect some new interesting projects to appear which will open additional ways to develop NSU, including educational programs in English, Engineering Master’s courses, etc.”
Note: It should be recalled that in 2013 there was an open contest held for gaining state support by the leading universities in Russia on competitive recovery and progress in the world rankings. As a result 15 winning universities received the support, and NSU was one of the winners. In 2013 NSU received 592.4 million rubles from the federal budget.
This year the subsidies were allocated on the basis of recommendations and advice of the Council on competitive recovery of the leading Russian universities among the leading international scientific and educational centers.
The federal support in 2014 has been allocated as follows:
• National Research University Moscow National Institute of Physics and Technology (State University), National Research University Higher School of Economics and MEPhI National Research Nuclear University get 950 million rubles each;
• National Research University ԹϹ, St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, National University of Science and Technology “MISiS”, Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin get 775 million rubles each;
• The rest 7 winners get 600 million rubles each. It totals 10.15 billion rubles this year.
The subsidies are to increase the number of Russian universities to occupy leading positions in Higher Education World University Rankings, to raise the quality of Russian education in general and its competitiveness on the world educational market in particular.
As a result of implementation of the Program and according to the presidential decree signed on 7 May 2012 on the state program for the development of education and science, at least five Russian universities should enter the top one hundred world's leading universities in 2020.
