On 9-10 June, Novosibirsk hosted the International Forum on Technological Development «Technoprom-2016». The main theme of the forum was the development of the Arctic. Specialists of NSU told about geological and geophysical researchers in this field.
³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø on the platform of «Technoprom» surprised visitors with globes with unusual outlines of continents. That's how clearly NSU specialists have demonstrated the reconstruction of the continental drift - one of the directions of the paleomagnetic analysis method being developed at the NSU. The ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø for many years has a group of scientists, which studies issues of geodynamics and paleomagnetism of the Arctic region. With the help of paleomagnetic data, geologists restore the mutual position of ancient continents and oceans and try to recreate the face of the Earth, in particular, the Arctic, as it was hundreds of millions of years ago.
Visitors to the forum could learn how to study the geodynamics and tectonic structure of the continental shelf of the Arctic region using the paleomagnetic method. Such studies are necessary for the scientific substantiation of the outer boundary of the Russian Arctic shelf in the Arctic Ocean. They have formed the basis for the application for expanding the borders of the Russian Federation, submitted to the UN Commission in 2015.
The results of paleomagnetic studies are also used in the reconstruction of the formation of sedimentary oil and gas basins of Siberia and the Arctic seas.
With the help of the unique modern equipment, at NSU has been collected the most comprehensive database of paleomagnetic data for the Arctic region in recent years. Research is carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics and unites many other organizations.
