Prof. Lev Weiner (Israel) to Give Lectures at NSU

On 26 Sep., 29 Sep., and 2 Oct., NSU welcomes Professor Lev Weiner with a series of lectures on “Using the method of the Electron Spin/Paramagnetic Resonance (ESR/EPR) in biology and medicine”. The visit is organized in the frameworks of the Program 5-100.

The lectures will cover the use of modern physical methods in biology and medicine with the focus on the EPR method for solving particular medical problems. The course provided consists of three lectures.

The first lecture held on 26 Sep., Room 402 lab.b. informs about the main EPR principles and shows which parameters of EPR spectra are used for solving certain medical problems including cancer treatment.

The second lecture held on 29 Sep., Room 442 lab.b. dwells upon the use of some original EPR approaches developed by L.Weiner and his colleagues at the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion SB RAS and Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot (Israel) in biology and medicine.

The final lecture on 2 Oct., Room MA (main building) will be devoted to studying the mechanisms of generating oxygen radicals in cells and approaches to creating new specific anticancer drugs. This research is done together with Prof. A.Pokrovsky’s group (Department of Medicine, NSU). In addition, the lecturer will show how specific drugs for photodynamic cancer therapy can be created on the basis of structural information.

Reference: Lev Weiner studied at Odessa and Novosibirsk State Universities; up to 1990 he worked at the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion SB RAS (Novosibirsk). Since 1990 he has been working at Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot (Israel). In 1997 Lev Weiner headed the Laboratory of the EPR at the Institute. His main expertise is in the field of using the EPR for solving problems in chemistry, biology and medicine.

Everybody is welcome to attend the lectures.
