First academic battle with six young scientists competing in the frameworks of Science Slam was held in Novosibirsk. Each participant was armed with only a microphone, slides and a 10-minute-period for an ignite talk. During their presentation they were to conquer the audience with their bright ideas.
Science Slam is a format which combines features of a symposium and “stand up”.
The winner was chosen by the viewers, who had visited ∆t-cafe CAMPUS on 16 May, 2014, and expressed their preferences by booing. The organizers used a special sound level meter and fixed that the audience applauded most vigorously to Nariman Battulin, the Head of the Sector of Stem Cells Genomics at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (SB RAS), who spoke about milk being tastier twice when genetically modified.
“It was my first presentation at such an event, but I enjoyed it,’ says Nariman. “I hope the audience will remember not only my jokes, but also my scientific message. I tried to show genetically modified organisms as much less dreadful than our media depict them.”
Science Slam was a part of EUREKA!FEST, a science festival to be held on 15-18 May, 2014, in Novosibirsk. Its agenda includes master classes or workshops by prominent theoreticians and explainers aimed at students of all ages, trainings for school teachers and a fair of scientific discoveries.
The Festival is devoted to the EU-Russia Year of Science and an International Year of Crystallography. Festival organizers are the Ministry of education, science and innovation policy of the Novosibirsk region, ԹϹ and public fund "Akademgorodok". Science Slam is to be continued and will be held in Novosibirsk as early as September, 2014.
