North Asia Territory Development Reconstructed at NSU

One of the winners of the open public competition for grants of the Russian Science Foundation on priority activities of the existing research laboratories (chairs) is the project of Vyacheslav Molodin, Academician of RAS, Professor at the Archaeology and Ethnography Chair of the Humanities Department at NSU. The project on fundamental archaeological and ethnographic research of North Asia is to be conducted at the Humanities Research Laboratory of NSU.

RSF grants are given for the implementation of basic research and exploratory research in 2014-2016 years, followed by possible extension of the project for one or two years. The amount of each grant varies fr om 5 to 10 million rubles annually, and the projects supported cannot be funded from any other resources during the whole period of their implementation.

The project by Vyacheslav Molodin has become one of 161 winners among more than 1,800 projects.

The Humanities Research Laboratory, wh ere the project is to be implemented, was established at NSU in 1988, in collaboration with the scientists of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the RAS and the common use centers of other Akademgorodok research institutes.

The project involves a wide range of works on archaeology and ethnography of North Asia. This research will be based on the analysis of archaeological, anthropological, ethnographic and written sources obtained by the project participants during their field investigations.

The leading researchers involved in the project are both internationally recognized scholars, such as Prof. Anatoliy Derevianko, a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the SB RAS; Natalia Polosmak, a corresponding member of the RAS; Prof. July Khudyakov, the Head of the Chair of archaeology and ethnography at NSU; Prof. Mikhail Shunkov, Deputy Director of The Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, SB RAS and a reader in the Chair of archaeology and ethnography at NSU; and other prominent scientists as well as young scientists, post-graduates and students.

The result is expected as an up-to-date reconstruction of human settlement processes in North Asia. Scientific discoveries are planned to be adapted and integrated into new courses of study at NSU, there will be field and laboratory trainings organized, curricula updated and educational materials improved and created anew.

The project participants are going to publish the results of their investigations in Russian and foreign journals.
