NSU NTI Scientists Create New Material Thermal Barrier Tile for Gas Turbines

Gas turbine parts are complex products made of heat-resistant alloys and coatings that are subjected to extremely high mechanical and thermal loads. Scientists from the NSU National Technology Initiative (NTI) Competence Center for new functional materials have created a completely domestic thermal barrier tile that keeps the gas turbine from melting during its operation.

The tile’s resources for the operation of a gas turbine plant’s combustion chamber is from 8 to 30 thousand operating hours, temperature loads are up to 1300 degrees, and there are several hundred tiles in the chamber, depending on the type of turbine. According to the scientists, this development will be of value to large generating companies.

Anton Ryazantsev, Head of the Center, described the importance of this work,

Since the supply of spare parts for gas turbines from manufacturers is severely disrupted, large-scale work is underway to localize development and production in the Russian Federation. Without spare parts and consumables, the operation of gas turbines is impossible and this has a critical impact on the Russian Federation energy system. We switched to a domestic alloy, developed a coating technology, and have already released the first prototypes. In Russia, the share of gas turbines in the energy sector is growing. Therefore, the demand and need for developments in this sphere is obvious.
