X-Rays for Criminalistics and Archaeology

Specialists of the Law Department at NSU and BINP SB RAS plan to set up a joint laboratory for forensic research using scientific methods. Damaged records will be studied in X-rays with the following analysis of the fluorescent radiation. The method developed could be used in criminalistics, archaeology and history.

The X-ray methods proposed are based on the analysis of the fluorescent radiation emitted by the object to study. They help to visualize the damaged records, which can be written or typed, in a reliable way. Such methods can also be used to analyze materials in consumer products.

Methods of confocal X-ray microscopy allow chemical mapping of an object in two or three dimensions without damaging the object. Thus, it will be possible to reconstruct a hidden text covered by some substances, another inscription or a sketch.

The laboratory starts in the autumn of 2015. The project is under the supervision of the Dean of the Law Department at NSU, Prof. Valery S. Kurcheev
